New Zealand Flag Referendum Explained
A brief explanation of the New Zealand flag referendum.
New Zealand's flag is very similar to Australia's flag, and features a Union Jack as a canton, despite the fact that it has been a fully independent country for nearly 70 years. For these reasons, many people feel that changing the flag would be appropriate.
First, flags were submitted by the public, with over 10,000 entries. The flag committee then narrowed these time to a finally 4. A 5th option was later added due to a petition.
A referendum between these 5 flags was held during November and December 2015. The winner of this referendum will go head-to-head with the current New Zealand flag in the 2nd referendum in March 2016.
