A Son's Betrayal: The Fine Family Murders | Maryville Tennessee 1977
In 1977, a telephone repairman arrived at a quiet home on Everett Avenue in Maryville, Tennessee, to fix a phone line. Instead, he discovered the decomposing bodies of Helen and Maynard Fine -- a married couple who had been shot multiple times and left undiscovered for two weeks. What followed was one of the most haunting cold cases in Blount County history.
The Maryville Police Department launched an investigation, but despite recovering the murder weapon from a local landfill a year later, the case went cold. For forty-six years, the murders of Helen Fine, age 54, and Maynard Fine, age 67, remained unsolved. Their killer walked free.
Then, in May 2021, a family member made a phone call that changed everything. The case was reopened. Modern forensic techniques were applied to decades-old evidence. And in November 2023, the couple's own son -- Michael Keith Fine, then 80 years old -- was arrested in Alabama and indicted on two counts of first-degree murder.
But justice had one more twist. In August 2025, a Blount County judge dismissed the charges, ruling that the passage of 46 years had created an "insurmountable" disadvantage for the defense. The case remains officially unresolved.
This is the story of a son's ultimate betrayal, a community's shattered innocence, and the haunting question of whether justice delayed is justice denied.
