The Murder of Barbara Villareal | 37-Year Cold Case Solved by DNA

In 1986, 27-year-old Barbara Fay Villarreal was found stabbed to death inside her home on Colbath Street in Garland, Texas. A large kitchen knife lay near her body, and blood evidence was recovered from the scene. Her husband was quickly cleared as a suspect, and despite investigators entering the DNA into the national CODIS database, no match was found. The case went cold.

For nearly four decades, Barbara's murder remained one of the Garland Police Department's most haunting unsolved cases. Her husband was killed in a shootout in Mexico just two years later, in 1988, adding another layer of tragedy to an already devastating story. Detectives came and went. The FBI joined the investigation. Leads were pursued across two countries. But every trail led to a dead end.

Then, decades later, a revolutionary forensic technique called investigative genetic genealogy changed everything. When a relative of the killer uploaded their DNA to a public ancestry database, investigators were finally able to trace the genetic breadcrumbs back to a shocking suspect: Barbara's own brother-in-law, Liborio Canales.

Canales, a Mexican citizen, had been living freely in Mexico for 37 years. When he crossed the border into New Mexico in July 2023 to celebrate his 85th birthday with family, the FBI was waiting. He was arrested on a federal murder warrant and subsequently confessed to killing Barbara over a family argument.

In March 2024, at the age of 86, Canales pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 20 years in a Texas prison. The conviction was historic: it marked Dallas County's first-ever murder conviction secured through investigative genetic genealogy.

Barbara's mother, 93 years old at the time of the sentencing, had waited nearly four decades to see justice served for her daughter. The family released a statement saying they would never let Canales occupy their thoughts again, and that the decades of freedom he enjoyed should be considered a gift he did not deserve.

This is the story of how science, patience, and a mother's refusal to give up brought justice to Barbara Fay Villarreal.
