🔷Can Serra🔷
Casa Serra or Can Serra is a modernist building located at number 126 of the Rambla de Catalunya in Barcelona, the result of the 1903 project of the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch. Declared a Cultural Asset of National Interest by the Government of Catalonia on March 6, 2001.
Designed as a single-family house with the appearance of a mansion, recalling the old Renaissance Gralla house that disappeared in the mid-19th century, Puig i Cadafalch paid homage to it by making the main door and the ornamentation of the windows as a reproduction of said house-palace. The sculptor Eusebio Arnau together with Alfons Jujol were in charge of these tasks as well as those who made the medallions of the busts of Cervantes, Fortuny and Wagner placed on the windows. In the corner of the façade a tower with a medieval air was built and the top of the building is a cantilever with glazed ceramic.
Without being inhabited by its owner, it was used as a school for nuns from the year 1908; In the period of the Spanish civil war it was the headquarters of the Ministry of Health, after the war, the school was expanded between the years 1943-1945, and its sale was proceeded towards the year 1969. Around the eighties of the twentieth century, it was carried out another new remodeling to adapt it to be the headquarters of the Barcelona Provincial Council, demolishing the additions and doing some restoration works respecting the work of Puig i Cadafalch and expanding with a new building at the back, a project by the architects Federico Correa and Alfonso Milà.
