How to cut acrylic plastic light fixture cover

In this video I show how to cut those acrylic light fixture covers simply with a utility knife. The product used was Duralens Prisimatic Clear by Plaskolite available at Lowes.

The key is to clamp the plastic between two pieces of wood. A piece of plywood below for full support and a 2x4 on top as a guide, use a new blade on your utility knife then make many light pressure passes from the smooth side until it cuts through. In this video it took about 8 passes.

Cutting with the least amount of resistance or pressure is the safest way to cut. So a grinder or even worse a saw with teeth is more likely to break them. Clamping and cutting half way through with a knife then snapping is the manufacturers directions and if doing a lot it works fine ( I did one pass and snap 4 times on my waste to fit my trash can and it never fractured). However many don't cut far enough through have a dull knife or the plastic was old and brittle so they end up breaking. So if doing just one why risk it clamp and light cuts until all the way through.
