Schneck Heritage Tour of Germany and Switzerland 1999: Part 4 of 5

To honor the 250th year of Schnecks in America, descendants of Adam Schneck came to Germany and Switzerland in July 1999 to explore the region of their ancestors. Adam Fridirich Schneck (1718-1794) was a 1749 immigrant to eastern Pennsylvania from the Palatinate (Sersheim, Baden-Württemberg). Part 4 begins on Thursday evening, when we explored the mountain lake and town of Lungern, where we would be lodging for the next two nights. Friday's tour began in Lauterbrunnen, where we took the train to Kleine Scheiddegg to see the highest mountains in Switzerland: Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. The train took us up to the top of the majestic Jungfrau, where some in our group actually went sledding. We returned via Interlaken and along Lake Brienz, then back to Lungern for the night. Saturday we took a scenic drive over Susten Pass via Andermatt, over the Oberhalb Pass along the "young" Rhine to Thusis in the Canton of Grissons, Switzerland. Along the way, we stopped at a country church that delighted us when we stepped inside. We were greeted by beautiful live orchestral music that filled the impressive Baroque interior. A rehearsal was happening! Sunday morning, we drove through the southern region of Switzerland near the Italian border, passing through Lenzerheide as we headed toward the historic town of Chur. There, we explored an old Catholic church at the top of the hill, and wandered the cobblestone streets. We happened to be there that Sunday morning before services began. Soon after 10:15 am, all of the church bells in town broke the pristine silence with their noisy and insistent clanging; it was glorious!
