Remembering Rev. Bob Childress | The Man Who Moved a Mountain | Rock Churches of Southwest Virginia

Robert "Bob" Childress was born in 1890 in a rural, isolated part of southwest Virginia known as "The Hollow," now Ararat. He became a Presbyterian minister, leading and establishing churches in Carroll, Patrick, and Floyd counties. During his 30 years of ministry, Rev. Bob Childress was known for his kindness to all, as he worked to transform the region's culture of violence and promote basic education. Six of the churches he pastored were rock-faced, including Buffalo Mountain Presbyterian Church (the "Mother Church") where Rev. Childress raised his family and where he is buried.
On July 15, 2023, people gathered at the Ararat Ruritan Club to hear various speakers share stories about Rev. Bob Childress. Bob's grandson, Rev. Stewart Childress, came and shared remarks about his grandfather.
