The MiSTer FPGA Sega Mega Drive / Genesis core is advancing with MD+ support currently in development, and this early WIP preview highlights its potential to enhance classic 16-bit gaming. MD+ enables the use of high-quality external audio, allowing games to feature CD-quality soundtracks while still running on accurate FPGA hardware.

Compared to MSU-MD, MD+ offers several key advantages. It is designed to integrate more cleanly with original game code, requiring less patching and reducing the chance of compatibility issues. MD+ also provides better timing and synchronisation between gameplay and audio, helping ensure music transitions feel natural and responsive. In many cases, it’s a more streamlined and developer-friendly approach, making it easier to support across multiple titles.
