The Executions Of The Dachau Liberation Reprisals

During the Second World War, as the Allies and the Red Army advanced towards the German heartland, they came across huge networks of concentration camps. What they found was the true horror and crimes of Hitler's Third Reich, and one of the first concentration camps set up was also was one of the last ones to be liberated. Inside of Dachau Concentration Camp, around 188,000 people passed through the barbed wire fences, and dozens of thousands were killed inside of the camp. Disease was rife, and thousands were dying of starvation with the SS guards also executing prisoners and beating them terribly. When the US Army liberated Dachau, they saw a true hell on earth.

Death and disease was everywhere, as were the thousands of corpses which had been simply just left by the Germans. However whilst liberating, the US Army captured a large number of the SS guards who worked at the camp. But during the liberation, it's claimed that in brutal reprisals for the shocking treatment of prisoners, US Army staff carried out executions and killings of the German SS Prisoners of War to enact some immediate justice for the prisoners of Dachau. There's accounts of German soldiers being killed by machine gun fire, and by other US Army Officers who took justice into their own hands.

The Dachau Liberation Reprisals its predicted were responsible for the killings of up to 50 SS guards and staff who worked at the concentration camp. Some of the guards were also killed by liberated prisoners who beat them to death with any weapon the could find. An official investigation was ordered after the war to uncover what occurred during the Liberation of Dachau, and more stories of reprisals were discovered.
