Leaning trailer close to falling down cliff in Malibu Hills
On August 9, 2019, we received a call to respond to a loaded tractor-trailer that "needed to be winched" per the customer. Customers don’t always give the best descriptions, but I know the area and know that it was more than likely a simple winch job. I had a medium-duty truck respond first to secure the call in case it was something simple, while I took off in our 60-ton rotator.
Upon arrival, it was clear that it was not a simple winch job. The trailer was several feet over the line and leaning pretty bad. It was loaded with about 12,000 pounds of furniture, which was less weight than we had originally predicted. However, because of the precarious positioning of the trailer and the fact there was a cliff on one side of the trailer made this job more difficult. Additionally, the trailer was situated on a narrow two-lane road meant for cars, so we had to block both sides of the road to allow us to work safely.
Retrieving the Loaded Trailer Safely
I positioned the rotator offset to the rear of the trailer since there was limited boom, then secured it from the top using a container link to each winch line. Once secured, the trailer was lifted and brought as close to my truck as possible to allow him to finish the turn and continue on his way.
Our team had to be precise and move slowly and safely in order to make sure the loaded trailer didn’t tip over and fall into the Malibu Hills. This, much like many of the jobs we get called to, required our team of towing professionals to use their expertise in order to help a customer in need.
If you or your trucking crew ever need a hand, Pepe’s Towing is ready to step up to the plate.
