The French Samurai – The Story of Jules Brunet

Jules Brunet was a French army officer who took part in the French intervention in Japan. He arrived in Japan in 1867 as part of a military mission to modernize the Tokugawa Shogunate forces. After the fall of the Shogunate, Brunet chose to stay and support the resistance of the Tokugawa army against the imperial restoration forces. He participated in several battles as a leader and strategist but was captured and repatriated to France. His experience in Japan marked a significant moment in Franco-Japanese relations.
