Laid up Great Lakes ship | JOHN SHERWIN
Over 20 years after being built in 1958, John Sherwin entered long term layup in Duluth, MN where it was used for some storage, and in 1998 there were rumors of it being converted to a self unloader and returned to service, but still it sat.
⚓︎
In 2006 it was inspected for service, but the decision was made for it to be used for grain storage in Chicago, IL, and for the first time in over 20 years it left the port of Duluth.
⚓︎
In 2008, 10 years since the first rumors of a possible return to service, it left Chicago under tow and went to Bay Shipbuilding in Sturgeon Bay, WI. It was to be re-powered, converted to diesel, and have a self-unloading system installed to return to active duty in 2010. A few months after arriving at Bay Shipbuilding and work had started, the plans were put on hold again due to the state of the economy.
⚓︎
In October 2009 it was moved from Sturgeon Bay to this remote Interlake Steamship Dock on the St. Mary’s River in DeTour Village, MI. Here it sits laid up without an engine/propulsion or propeller. Although it sits on gated private property, access by water provides great up close views. ⚓︎
