More information about the video content bellow:
1. Newfoundland was a longtime holdout to joining the Canadian Confederation; it wasn’t until 1949 when it finally joined the rest of the country. Until then it was an independent nation and even today the flags and colors of the country/province can be seen flying proudly almost anywhere you go.

2. While almost everyone just calls the province Newfoundland, that’s not entirely correct. The full name is Newfoundland & Labrador, changed in 2001 in order to recognize the enormous tract of land included within its borders. Still, only a small percentage of the province’s population lives there, making this one of the most sparsely populated regions on the continent. While the province encompasses both Newfoundland AND Labrador, a shocking 94% of the population lives on Newfoundland. Of those folks, another whopping 40% live in St. John’s, the capital city.

3. St. John's is the capital and largest city in Newfoundland and Labrador. The city spans 446.04 square kilometres and is North America's easternmost city. Existing on maps as early as 1519, it is one of the oldest European settlements in North America. The city has a rich history, having played a role in the French and Indian War, the American Revolutionary War, and the War of 1812. Italian inventor Guglielmo Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless signal in St. John's. St. John's was nearly burnt to a crisp during the 18th century. Five times to be exact! They happened in 1816, 1817, 1819, 1846, but the most deadly of all was the Great Fire in 1892.

4. You can travel to France without leaving the province. Sort of. – In what is a great example of how bizarre colonial politics were, there is a bit of France located in Newfoundland. Saint Pierre and Miquelon is a self-governing overseas collectivity of France, right off the coast of the province and the only remnant of the former New France still under French control.

5. Vikings lived there – Long before Columbus “discovered” the New World, Vikings had already settled Newfoundland around the year 1,000. Today the site is immortalized in L’Anse aux Meadows, a Viking colony discovered in the 1960s.

6. The only known case of German‘s landing in North America during WWII was in Newfoundland. On October 22, 1943, German submarine U-537 landed on Martin Bay in the north of Labrador and set up a remote weather station, Kurt. It was forgotten and wasn’t visited again until 1981.

7. Newfoundland & Labrador is unique, but the mummers tradition is one of the craziest and most awesome tradition on the island. Mummering takes place during the 12 days of Christmas and groups of friends, family, and community members dress up in homemade masks and costumes and move as large groups from home to home. The members of the visited home try to guess the identity of the disguised and if they guess right, they must remove the mask. Drinks and food and party take place during the event and costumes can be extremely elaborate with padding, cross dressing, and voice altercations.
