Spinal Flexion: Good or Dangerous?

🤔 It depends on who you ask.

On the basis that bending a dead pig spine 80,000 times a day cases disc herniations, some people will suggest that we should avoid using any flexion/ extension based exercises in the gym (ex: Sit-ups, Jefferson Curls, Side Bends, etc.) (McGill 2002)

📊 However when we look at humans who do loaded spinal flexion and extension in their sport for 10 years, we see that they don’t have higher incidence of disc herniations when compared to similar non flexion/ extension based athletes. (Foss and Bahr 2012)

As with most things, the truth probably lies somewhere in the middle.

🏋🏽‍♂️ If you’re taking the extreme approach of only ever doing neutral spine core exercises, you’re probably limiting your movement options too much and potentially not fully preparing your athletes for the complex movement demands of sport and life.

But at the same time, not everyone wants or needs to be doing loaded spinal flexion exercises.

👇🏽 What do you think?
