Hawks of India: There are 8 types of Hawks in India, and the state-wise details are as follows,
Nicobar Islands - Nicobar Sparrowhawk
Indian Subcontinent – Besra, Eurasian Sparrowhawk, Shikra
North India - Crested Goshawk, Northern Goshawk
North East India - Chinese Sparrowhawk, Crested Goshawk, Japanese Sparrowhawk
North West India - Northern Goshawk
South West India - Crested Goshawk

There are 8 species of hawks found in India

Besra, also called the besra sparrowhawk is grayish brown above with a grayer head and neck, pale underparts with orange barring and blotches, and distinctive dark line in center of white throat.

Chinese Sparrowhawk is gray above with orange-suffused white underparts; also note bright yellow cere (skin around the nostrils) found in North East India.

Crested Goshawk has a namesake crest that is usually held low and not very visible. Adult has a gray head, brown wings, whitish underparts with thick orange-brown stripes in belly and streaks in breast, and white throat with black borders. They are found in South West, North and North East of India.

Eurasian Sparrowhawk, also known as the Northern Sparrowhawk is smaller and much less bulky than Northern Goshawk, and with horizontally barred instead of vertically striped underparts.

Japanese Sparrowhawk is slaty gray above and finely barred with brownish orange below. Smaller and more compact-looking than Eurasian Sparrowhawk found in North East India.

Nicobar Sparrowhawk looks similar to Shikra, but is smaller and paler, and has no tail bands. They are found in the Nicobar Islands.

Northern Goshawk is an uncommon, bulky, forest-dwelling hawk. Adults are overall gray, paler below, blackish crown and cheek, and white eyebrow. They are found in the North and North West of India.

Shikra males have a reddish iris, blue gray upperparts and fine brownish-orange barring on underparts. Females have a yellowish iris and brownish gray upperparts.
