From years of research, we know that artificial sweeteners aren’t the best choice when it comes to our health. But if you’re anything like me, sometimes it’s not enough just to have someone tell us something is bad for us, we want to know the specific risks at stake. Well, there are actually several health risks attributed to many artificial sweeteners. But first, some brief science. Now, as nasty as this may sound, our body actually has way more bacteria cells (around 100 trillion) than ‘human’ cells (around 50 trillion). Twice the amount. And while that might be a little unsettling, that army of bacteria (gut flora) living throughout our digestive tract plays a major role in our overall health and wellness. When they’re happy and healthy, we are too. But when they’re not, our health starts to suffer.

So before we get into the negative effects artificial sweeteners have on our gut flora, let’s take a closer look at the essential roles these gut bacteria play in our overall health. They have a hand in everything from our metabolism to the strength of our immune system and even our brain health. These little guys are basically running the show.

Now, the good news is that there are several great alternatives out there for us meaning we can avoid any potential risk from artificial sweeteners altogether.
