Micro-Habitat Spotlight - Shady Mushroom Garden (Part 1)

Micro-Habitat Spotlight - Heavy Shade Rain Garden.

I’ve mentioned this project previously in a few of my other videos, but I finally got around to tackling it today. This is my wine cap mushroom shade garden. This specific area shown in the video receives less than 3 hours of sunlight a day in peak summertime. It actually receives more light currently, since the trees haven’t leafed out yet.

I utilized hostas in the space to help add root structure to the soil and greenery to the space as well. Since this area gets such a little amount of sun, I’m not sure if I’ll add other plants, but I could potentially add a few ferns and other shade loving species.

I also inoculated some mulch underneath my fruit trees in the front yard of my property. Therefore I’ll have a large space with varying amounts of sunlight that I’ll be able to track the mushroom growth. Under two of my young trees, they will have almost full sunlight on the mulch until those trees leave out, and then they will have mostly sunny days throughout the summer. The patch I put underneath my plum tree will be slightly shaded; however, as the tree leaves out, which it already is budding, that patch will receive a medium amount of sun in comparison to the other two patches mentioned.

I’ll keep you all updated if I get any flushes this year, though if I do, I expect it to be late summer at the earliest.
