Bottom Watering Seedlings

Bottom Watering Seedlings Tips

Bottom watering seedlings helps roots grow stronger because the roots have to grow down into the soil, reaching for the water.

But how do you know if the seedlings need water? When is it time to bottom water your trays?

I go by look and feel, especially feel.

You can look at the top of the soil. If it’s black, they most likely don’t need water. The darker the soil (usually), the wetter the soil.

But feel. Feeling the tray is the best way to tell if the plant needs water.

Pick up the tray, individual pot, or container and feel it.

If it feels light, like a feather, it definitely could use some water. If it’s really heavy, even sagging a bit (if you’re using trays), it most likely doesn’t need water.

Now, each plant variety is a little different. Some plants like more water than others so it’s also important to observe your seedlings and get to know your plants.

For example, a water loving plant like celery would require more water than a dry loving plant like a pepper.

Happy gardening, friends!
