Heavy Lifting Without the Damage: The FP Alternative
The surgeon at the start of the video is spot on. These barbell lifts are directly contributing to the increasing number of spine, hip, and knee surgeries people are undergoing.
Regardless of your form or how “light” the weight is, the physics of the barbell deadlift simply don’t support strength and longevity with your spine. You might put up impressive numbers for a few years, but eventually, the compression takes its toll, leaving you unable to move or sprint without pain.
If you want to a strong, mobile and reliable spine then the majority of your training should revolve around horizontal force production. This involves the rotation of your spine as your ribs move forward and back like they do in sprinting. We are not against lifting heavy. We do it all the time. Except when we do it enhances movement instead of damaging it.
We have a great deal of respect for the first surgeon for being honest, unlike @drdavidabbasi, who seems a bit too comfortable recommending an exercise that thousands of people have reported to us as causing them pain.
