Why the Deadlift is "Playing with Spinal Fire"

1. Stuck in one plane of motion. Nearly all aspects of movement involve horizontal and transverse forces.

2. Requires excessive weight for minimal posterior chain activity. This makes you more prone to injury as you need high amounts of weight to achieve muscle fatigue.

3. Overly ingrains a 50/50 weight distribution.

The majority of athletic movement and daily activities involve transferring weight from one foot to the other. Is there an application to standing in place or picking things up with both feet on the ground?

💯 percent, we’re advising that the barbell deadlift is one of the worst tools for the job. The returns you get on muscle recruitment compared to the weight you have to load on the bar just don’t pan out for what we face in reality.

The deadlift also has one of the lowest margins for error in exercise. No matter how you scale people up, you’re playing with spinal fire in exchange for minimal recruitment of your glutes and posterior chain. There are better tools for the job.
