How MrBeast Became The Biggest YouTuber

Jimmy Donaldson-- aka Mr. Beast-- is without a doubt the king of YouTube. He’s got the number 5 most subscribed to channel in the world at 93 Million, a total of 15.3 Billion views on his main channel, and one of the most watched videos of 2021 with his legendary recreation of ‘Squid Games. Mr. Beast is breaking records left and right, and it looks like he’s not slowing down anytime soon. But it wasn’t always success after success for the 23 year old. It took him years to get to where he is now. So how’d he start? And how’d he get so good at making YouTube videos? Mr. Beast started his youtube channel on February 12th, 2012. We just passed his 10th anniversary with YouTube! Sadly he hasn’t yet reached 100 million subscribers, but there’s pretty much nothing that can stop him at this point. He’s averaging almost 50 thousand new subscribers a day. It’s only a matter of time until he overtakes number four on the list, Pewdiepie. The famous Swedish gamer has openly talked about how he knows Mr. Beast is going to pass him sometime soon. Talk about game recognizing game! This kind of success takes a lot of hard work though, and Mr. Beast definitely put in the hours in his younger years. He once sawed a folding table in half with a plastic knife. He counted to one-hundred thousand-- it took 40 hours. He said ‘Pewdiepie’ one-hundred thousand times. I think you can start to pick up on a theme. Mr. Beast loves completing insane challenges, and to him, YouTube is the biggest challenge of all. In interviews, Jimmy says he was completely obsessed with YouTube from the moment he started his channel (spoiler alert, he still is). He would spend hours in a skype group with other creators trying to figure out the YouTube algorithm. He did research on what thumbnails were the best for getting a new viewer’s attention-- even down to the background color! He did research on the best clickbait (another spoiler alert, it’s money). He did research on rapidly growing channels. He did research on what people want to watch and for how long. He did research on everything, but it still took a long time for his long hours to pay off. When Jimmy was eighteen his mom wanted him to go to college. The only problem was going to classes would put a dent in his ability to spend all day, every day working on videos. So he came up with a solution! He told his mom he was going to school, but eventually started just making videos from his car. He would grind day in and day out. It all paid off when he made his first big bucks from YouTube adsense. After putting out a video that made him over $20,000 in a month, Mr. Beast told his mom he had stopped going to classes and was going to pursue YouTube full time. Obviously this didn’t go over too well. In a story about his first sponsored video, Mr. Beast talks about how he spent over 2 hours convincing the company to change the sponsorship price from $5,000 to $10,000. Not so that he could get a payday, but because he wanted to give it all away and 10k looked better than 5k in the title.
