The Soviets entered Afghanistan to support its communist government, which was struggling against a growing rebellion. This rebellion was led by the Mujahideen, a mix of Islamic fighters who opposed Soviet rule. Over the next ten years, the Mujahideen, backed by countries like the United States, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia, and China, fought a brutal guerrilla war against the Soviet army. The U.S. supplied them with billions of dollars in weapons, including Stinger missiles, which helped them shoot down Soviet aircraft.
