Beyond Sugar: How Endothelial Dysfunction Accelerates Cardiovascular Aging
When people think about diabetes and heart disease, they usually think about high blood sugar, clogged arteries, and heart attacks. But the story begins earlier. Much earlier. In this episode of Datando a Ciência, we go beyond the metabolic surface to explore how chronic hyperglycemia can damage the endothelial glycocalyx, reduce nitric oxide bioavailability, disrupt vascular signaling, and promote inflammation, arterial stiffness, and early cardiovascular aging.
This is not just a story about “pipes getting blocked.” It is a story about a living biological interface losing its protective intelligence. The endothelium is not merely a lining — it is an active regulator of vascular tone, hemodynamics, inflammation, and homeostasis. When that system begins to fail, cardiovascular aging can accelerate long before major clinical events appear.
