RAM 2500 HEMI TICK (6.4 Liter) | Ticking Noise at START UP - Should You be Worried??

I go over the HEMI TICK on my ram 2500 with the 6.4 liter hemi engine. I discuss if ticking at start up is something to be concerned about with your engine. same thing applies for any RAM 1500 with the 5.7 liter hemi. Turns out ticking on start up is completely normal and there is nothing wrong with your engine! I explained what is happening when your engine is ticking at start up and how to potentially fix the issue!
I hope everyone is having a good week! I wanted to touch on the topic of the hemi tick once again because everyone seems to be worried about it. this time I am focusing on the hemi tick when starting your engine.

so there are 3 different categories when looking into this problem. if your engine tick between 2 and 10 seconds. if your engine ticks for 30 seconds to a couple minutes and finally does your hemi never stop ticking after start up.

Today I am focusing on the first situation but if your engine is only ticking for 30 seconds to a couple minutes. odds are your are looking at an exhaust manifold leak. this is very common for the 5.7 liter hemi's. it is annoying but nothing really to worry about.

if your hemi tick never goes away them we are potentially looking at the "real hemi tick" where the lifters are smashing into the cam lobes and causing real damage to the engine - not good. this is caused by the lifter needle bearings failing.

but if you engine is only ticking upon start up for a couple of seconds this is normal and really nothing to worry about. RAM even has a section in the owners manual talking about how this is normal.

so this early ticking noise is created because the engine has lost oil pressure and it takes a couple of seconds to regain that oil pressure. since the lifter are hydraulically adjusted and activiated without engine oil pressure the lifter are going to hit into the cam lobes for a couple of seconds before engine oil pressure gets to them.

the lifters and cam shaft are one of the last places to receive oil pressure so this kind of makes sense why it takes a couple of seconds to correct this issue.

This should be somewhat random and if so nothing to worry about. however there are way to prevent this from happening. short drives are one thing to avoid as well as setting the truck and engine sit for a long period of time.

the other thing that I think it not really talked about too much is the oil filter. the oil filter has whats called an anti-drain back valve that prevents oil from draining back to the engine oil pan and it keeps a good amount of oil in the engine so when you go to start up the lifter components have oil flow right away. if you have a cheap filter or a bad valve this can create ticking on start up much more common. so it is a good idea to spend the money have get a good oil filter. and if you are having ticking noise on start up regularly I would change your oil filter!
