Explaining Ectopic Pregnancy: What are the symptoms of ectopic pregnancy? (subtitles)

The Explaining Ectopic Pregnancy series raises awareness about ectopic pregnancy through personal stories from women and men who have endured the condition in their own words. In these candid videos, our supporters speak openly about their experiences of ectopic pregnancy to reach out to others going through the same ordeal.

An ectopic pregnancy is a frightening and intense experience. The physical aspects are demanding and the emotional toll is often traumatic. Women and partners feel overwhelmed and alone. By sharing journeys through these videos, we offer support from those of us who have walked a similar path and aim to relieve isolation.

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a pregnancy implants outside of the uterus (womb). It affects 1 in 80 pregnancies and is a leading cause of death in early pregnancy. It is a life-threatening condition and overwhelming for a woman and her family. A woman faces her own mortality, often has emergency surgery, loses her pregnancy and is left with worries about the future, all at the same time.

The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust is passionate about raising awareness of the condition so that symptoms are known and can be identified early to enable women to get the care that they need quickly. We believe providing information about the condition helps women and families understand what is happening. Empowering women and their families results in an increase in personal knowledge and reduces a degree of stress and confusion, helping the healing process. We are also there to support through the emotional process of trying to get pregnant again and the frightening period of discovering whether a subsequent pregnancy is ectopic.

The Ectopic Pregnancy Trust is a small UK based charity that strives to provide information, education and support for those affected by ectopic pregnancy. The charity seeks to raise awareness about the condition so that the public are aware of symptoms to enable women to get medical care quickly; early diagnosis may enable some treatment choice that can be less invasive, can reduce emotional trauma and preserve a woman’s fertility level. It ensures women and their families leave hospital with relevant information and have someone to talk to about their trauma. The Charity’s Patrons are Charlotte Crosby, Phil Cairns, Michelle Gayle, Amanda Redman MBE and Susan Penhaligon.
