Year 4: Maths: Fractions: How to find a fraction of a quantity

Fractions can be tricky so in this tutorial, I am going to explain how to find fractions of quantities. I will show you how to find ½ of something for example and explain how you can use the same method to find fractions of quantities simply by dividing first and then multiplying.

This is a tricky concept to grasp so it’s important to get lots of practice in. Remind your child that finding a half of something means dividing by 2, finding a third is dividing by 3 and finding a fourth means dividing by 4 and so on. When working on finding say two thirds for example, encourage your child to find one third first and then multiply by 2. Think of it as a division exercise first and then multiplication.
