3 Reasons Juventus WON'T Win Serie A!
On today’s Scout Report, we look at why this could be the year Juventus finally lose their grip on Italian football. While Cristiano Ronaldo’s goals and Paulo Dybala’s ingenuity fired them to the Serie A title in 2019-20, they have had a rocky year, with Maurizio Sarri sacked after just one season, a humbling exit from the Champions League to Lyon, and the surprise hiring of Andrea Pirlo as manager.
The World Cup winner may be a legend on the field, but he has never coached before, and was originally hired to oversee the club’s under-23s. Following years of relative stability under Antonio Conte and Max Allegri, Juve’s turnover in the last twelve months may cost them. We also look at the make-up of Juve’s squad, which features numerous ageing stars of big wages and long contracts. A lack of transfer activity this summer has left Pirlo with limited options, especially in defence, and the team has struggled in chance creation, over-reliant on Ronaldo and Dybala and with little output coming from the midfield. They are also facing bigger competition than ever, with both Inter Milan and Atalanta improving in the last year and strengthening in the market – we may see the likes of Romelu Lukaku and Lautaro Martinez or Josip Ilicic and Papu Gomez holding the Serie A title next summer.
