IOWA DRIFTLESS REGION: CATCHING A PIECE OF TROUT HISTORY! (Fly Fishing French Creek, Allamakee, IA)

French Creek is such an amazing spring creek here in the Iowa Driftless. It fishes fairly similar to its sister streams in the area like Waterloo & Clear Creek. Riffles, runs, pools, and long flat sections of watercress give this creek a lot of character. But French Creek is a bit different from all the others, in a historical standpoint. French Creek was one of the first places that brown trout really managed to develop a naturally reproducing population of brown trout back when “bucket biology” was spreading the species West. Their numbers of fish were really high and the number of big healthy fish was even higher. Spring creeks are perfect places for trout to grow and get really big. All the nutrient rich water and vegetation makes for an absolute bug factory. But because this French Creek strain of brown trout did so well, the Iowa DNR now uses it to stock other streams in the area. They come through every year and shock the creek to grab the biggest and meanest brown trout in order to use them as broodstock. The Iowa DNR has found a great deal of success using wild fish as the brood stock. This means that if you have caught a brown trout (wild or stocked) here in the Iowa Driftelss Region, its roots run all the way back to French Creek.
