Zurdo’s Makeover Story

This is Zurdo's Story. Zurdo was my (Amber's) 2019 Battle of the TIP Trainers makeover mustang. The competition was created by Annie MacDermaid of Queen Creek, AZ (Annie has a TIP Storefront in Arizona, learn more about storefronts at the Mustang Heritage Foundation link below).

The competition was 14 or 16 (I can't remember) Professional and successful TIP Trainers (Trainer Incentive Program, link below) would get a wild 1-2 year old mustang, gentle and train them to compete in-hand. It would showcase the TIP Trainer's ability to meet the standards of the TIP Program set forth by the Mustang Heritage Foundation. There were three classes, a in-hand trail class, in-hand pattern class and a surprise class. The classes would show how the horse could handle and perform all the things a TIP Trained mustang should know before going to their new adopters home.
-Trailer loading
-Catching and haltering
-Leading and tying
-Being groomed/brushed
-Feet picked up
-Fly mask and fly spray

We also had to side pass, pivot, back, trot in-hand, go over obstacles, etc. The surprise class ended up being that a judge (same judge for everyone) had to go in a round pen where the trainer let the horse loose, catch the horse, halter, lead to a horse trailer, load and unload and then lead to a fence and tie then walk away. I LOVED that class! A well prepared and trained mustang SHOULD be able to handle that, ESPECIALLY one that will be going to a new home after training. I wish they would incorporate that in the Extreme Mustang Makeover competitions.

Only FIVE of the TIP Trainers made it back for the competition and were able to successfully prepare their wild mustang for the show. It was a tight competition! Watch the video to see how Zurdo did!

After the competition Zurdo spent a year growing up in the pasture when the perfect home came along. He was to become the companion to a rouge loner wild stallion named Surfer Dude. Surfer Dude has an incredible story and is truly a special horse. Learn more about him at the link below.
