NOVERIA - The Best Example of Player Freedom in the Mass Effect Trilogy

In this video, we’ll be covering the best quest for player choices in the entire Mass Effect Trilogy. I’m of course speaking about Noveria in Mass Effect 1 - which has no less than five ways to complete the first objective. Stay tuned to see them all.

One of my favorite things about playing RPGs is the freedom the player has to complete objectives in creative and interesting ways. Not every RPG does this or does this well, but the Noveria mission in Mass Effect 1 is a prime example of player freedom at its finest.

I could go on about Noveria for hours, and I probably will once Legendary Edition comes out and I can capture some of that glorious remastered gameplay footage. But for this video I’m going to focus on the first major objective of the mission, which can be completed in no less than five different ways, depending on the player’s choices.

For a bit of context - Commander Shepard and crew arrive on Noveria with the goal of tracking down Matriarch Benezia, a powerful Asari and Saren’s second-in-command. Benezia recently arrived on Noveria to check in on a secret research project that Saren is conducting at the Peak 15 station. Noveria is a haven for corporations conducting classified R&D projects, outside the prying eyes of government officials. As such, Shepard’s Spectre status offers little in the way of cooperation from the local administrator, a churlish Salarian named Anoleis.

Shepard needs to get to Peak 15 to track down Benezia, but in order to do this the Commander first needs to obtain a garage pass to allow the crew to leave Port Hanshan, which is currently on lockdown due to a snowstorm.

This first objective - getting a garage pass - seems simple and maybe even a bit boring on the face of it. But with five different ways to complete this objective, navigating corporate espionage and shady people to achieve Shepard’s goals is far from boring. This freedom of choice is what makes the quest so interesting and fun.
