Photographing Pygmy Owls in BC - Wildlife Photography Behind the Scenes

Join me and my friend Kevin Lippe (@crispimagephotography) as we go looking for Northern Pygmy Owls in the mountains of BC.

Pygmy Owls are super cute and very small - only about 7 inches! But make no mistake, they are very effective predators that can easily take prey as big as or even bigger than themselves. They are one of the few truly diurnal owls species - meaning they are active during the day and rest at night.

Finding a tiny little owl like this in the mountains is of course challenging - very much like looking for a needle in a haystack. To be successful, you need quite a bit of patience and a good understanding of their preferred habitats and what their calls sound like.

In the video you’ll see how Kevin and I locate Northern Pygmy owls and I’ll give you some actionable advice for where to look for them.

I am a passionate amateur wildlife photographer living in beautiful BC, Canada. I’m originally from Denmark, but I moved to BC in 2015. I photograph a wide variety of wildlife, but Belted Kingfishers have a very special place in my heart. Lately I’ve been spending more time in “stealth mode” using camouflage to conceal myself to the animals don’t change their behaviour do to my presence. It's waaaaaaay more difficult, and time consuming than simply walking around with your camera, but ultimately much more satisfying.
