It stretches 684 kilometres from Thonon-les-Bains, in the heart of the mountains, to Menton, on the Mediterranean coast. The road is popular with motorcyclists, who take in pit stops known as "Napoleon refuges". Among those who live here are farmers and woodcutters. And in the town of Briançon, military barracks are being turned into residences with spectacular views of the mountains.
