Tenths are fractions and represent a number that is less than a whole. One-tenth is a fraction that is represented as one part out of ten equal parts. One-tenth is also the answer to the division 1/10.

The first decimal place in our number system is Tenths and this place is positioned one place to the right of the Ones place. Fractions and decimals can be used to represent numbers that have a combination of whole and parts that are less than one whole.

Mixed numbers and improper fractions represent of numbers that have a whole and part less than a whole. Numbers with a whole and part less than a whole can also be represented using decimals by placing a decimal point at the end of the whole number part of the number and continuing with places to the right.

Students will investigate the connection between the decimal representation and the fraction representation of tenths for numbers less than 1 whole and more than one whole in this lesson.
