How usable is Windows 98 in 2026?

Among operating systems from the 1990's, one that stands out significantly is Windows 98, which added a lot to the table with Windows 9x. Being released in, well, 1998, it (and Windows NT 4.0) sit at the crossroads between the early days of Microsoft Windows and modern Microsoft Windows. Unlike Windows 95, which support ended for in late 2001, support for Windows 98 did not end until 2006, well into Windows XP's support, so it does beg the question of how usable Windows 98 is, 20 years after support ended for it?

Windows 98 (codename "Memphis") was released after two years of development on the 25th of June, 1998. Introducing new web-oriented features and enhancements to the Windows 9x line, it was overall praised by the press despite some journalists pointing out it didn't fix all of the prominent bugs in its predecessor (Windows 95), many of which would be addressed in Windows 98 Second Edition (1999). Originally intended to be the final version of Windows 9x, it would be superseded by Windows ME in 2000 due to Microsoft's contractual obligations with OEMs during the development of Windows Neptune and later, Windows Whistler (which became Windows XP). Support for both Windows 98 and ME ended in July of 2006, however software developers kept releasing software for it for another few years.
