James Webb telescope: Biden unveils its 1st photo from space | FULL

U.S. President Joe Biden and Vice-President Kamala Harris received a briefing on Monday from NASA and previewed the first image captured by the James Webb Telescope, the highest resolution photos of the infrared universe ever captured. It's expected further images will be released to the public on Tuesday.

In his remarks, Biden said it was a "historic day." NASA administrator Bill Nelson also commented on the image, saying that the first shot was "one little speck of the universe" and that it was showing galaxies "that are shining around other galaxies whose light has been bent." He added the image is just a small portion of the universe.

As the Hubble's $10-billion successor, the Webb telescope has been hailed as the world's premier space observatory. Now fully operational, it is able to peer back in time, possibly to 100 million years after the Big Bang.

In April 2022, NASA shared a series of test images showing the telescope's full field of view in deep space.
