This is a tech tip from International Auto Parts. Today we will be working on a 1984 GTV6. The rear spark plug seal well is leaking and putting oil down into the spark plug well itself. So we will need to take a lot of other stuff off to get to it. The first thing we are going to take of is going to be the airflow meter hose, airflow meter, and air box. Disconnect all the vacuum lines and the electrical connections. We are not going to be opening any coolant passages so you don't need to drain any coolant.
When you remove the ground cables make sure you put them back when you are done or there could be problems. Then pull the spark plug wires out. Next we are ready to remove the Allen head screws that are holding the valve cover in place. Before we can remove the valve cover we need to remove the lower portion of the air box so that we have enough room and there are just three bolts holding it in. Slide your valve cover out of the way. It's a good idea to stuff some rags in the drain backs to prevent anything from falling into the pan. Then we will remove the three seals and clean the surface of the head. It's a good idea to spray some solvent in the auxiliary air valve while you already have it off to get it clean, just make sure to let it dry.
We are going to use a Wurth Gasket Sealer all around the spark plug wells as well as the whole outside surface where the valve cover gasket will go. You want to let the gasket sealer sit and dry till it gets tacky so that it holds the gasket in place. When you put your gasket in place just make sure all the holes are lined up and press down firmly.
Now we are ready to remove the rags, put the cover back in place. It is best to start all the screws by hand and make sure that they are not getting cross threaded. When tightening up pretty much hand tighten and snug them up to 15' pounds. These are stainless steel screws going into an aluminum housing so they will strip out easily so do not over tighten. When you reattach the ground wires and auxiliary air valve they have the same tech spec as the valve cover screws. Plug your connectors, spark plugs, hoses back in place. Attach all the clamps to the hoses again. Finish up by attaching your air filter and air box. Make sure to give another look over to ensure everything was put back. Then take it for a test drive.
