Alfa Shock Orientation - International Auto Parts

This is a tech tip from International Auto Parts. Today we're going to look at the proper way to orient the shocks on your Alfa Romeo Spider.

There were several different types of shocks used on the cars over the years. We're going to look at some of the differences you may encounter when mounting the replacement shocks.

The first set we show is an original set of SPICA shocks from a 1978 Alfa Romeo Spider Veloce. The front shock you can tell by the sandwich bushing at the top and the press-in bushing at the bottom. The rear shock has sandwich bushings on the top and bottom.

The big difference that confuses people when replacing these shocks is where the dust boots are located on the original versus the new shocks.

As you can see in the video, the dust boot is located at the bottom of the original SPICA shocks. The video also shows the rear shock installed on a trailing arm to give you a better visual.

In the video we show the original-type Sachs front and rear shocks. Both front and rear shocks have the dust protector at the top.

The KYB front shock uses a metal shield as its dust protector, and is also located on the top. The KYB rear shock dust protector is on the bottom like the original.

A good rule of thumb with most shocks is that you should be able to read the label. If the label is upside down, chances are the shock is also. Mounting the shock upside down can cause severe damage to the internal parts, and could possibly cause it to fail. Always double check the manufacturer's installation instructions before starting work on the car to verify this.

Always take care with regards to moving suspension components, especially springs; when replacing shock absorbers. With proper safety precautions and the right tools you can have your car back on the road in no time.
