who can climb the island peak? I had climbed the island peak 3 times and sharing my climbing experience, what are the difficulties and who can climb it.
First of all, Island peak is a non-technical peak, which can be climbed safely by Trekkers with the support of a professional climbing guide but climbing island peak is physically very challenging. You must be prepared physically and mentally before the climb. If you are fit and in good shape, you will be able to enjoy the whole climbing experience.
Usually, people face their own fear, having a positive mindset is so important. If you have done all the preparation and training, you should feel confident in your own ability. Enjoy the journey rather than focusing on the top. You will get there.
As a beginner climber, climbing through the rough terrain at over 6000m, hanging on ropes, wearing big boots with crampons, and using all climbing gears on steep slope where air is thinner will be tough. However, the climbing route is safe because of fixed rope lines and the support of a guide.
At Island Peak base camp Sherpa guide will organize a special training session required for climbing including the use of climbing equipment and safety talk, which will be helpful for your climbing.
And another major concern is altitude sickness, there is a chance, anyone can get altitude sickness, never know, so make sure you well acclimatize before climbing the peak.
Island peak expedition begins with 35 min scenic flight to Lukla and trek to Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Tyangboche, Dingboche, Chukung, Island peak base camp and finally to the summit. But before heading towards to island peak you may continue trek to Everest base camp and KalaPatar from Dingboche and then back down to Dingboche village and trek to island peak base camp then summit of island peak 6189m. May be you noticed why Everest base camp and kalapattar before island peak, because it helps your body to acclimatize at a higher altitude before climbing the island peak.
Well stay hydrated, don’t rush, take it easy and keep climbing you will get there.

While climbing island peak, there is little objective danger as there is a vertical ice wall, crevasses, and potential avalanches along the route so everyone needs to be careful. The real climbing of Island Peak is the final 150 meters, which is steep but no worries there will be fixed rope and your guide will help you on every step. To avoid the potential risk on the climb, picking the right time for the climb is very important, In general, April-May and Oct-Nov are the best climbing seasons in Nepal.
