Angela Davis and Jackie Kay

For more than half a century Angela Y Davis has published, lectured and campaigned on behalf of many of the most disenfranchised peoples across the globe, making an outstanding contribution to struggles for social change. She is among the most legendary and influential public intellectuals of our age whose name is synonymous with struggles against oppression of all kinds.

In this conversation, Angela Davis is joined by Jackie Kay, one of Britain’s most acclaimed authors who in 2016 was named the Scots Makar, the poet laureate of Scotland. Throughout her extensive collections of writings, she is known for her powerful affirmation of the power of human connection in the context of shared struggle. Kay has explored the role and power of language, the ties of family and inheritance, as well as the histories and experiences of Afro-Caribbean people, and the ongoing legacies of the Atlantic slave trade.

This event was hosted by Decolonise Sociology and the Office for the Vice Chancellor, and co-sponsored by: Centre for African Studies, Centre for Latin American Studies, Centre for Gender Studies, Faculty of Education, Faculty of History, POLIS, UCU Cambridge, Downing College and Lord Chris Smith, Master of Pembroke.
