The area of which The Westin Excelsior stands is associated with a wealth of historical memories due to the richest families: the Umiliati, Boccaccio, family of Gondi and Londomez, who was properly the first to use it as a hotel. Then it was belonged to the noble Florentine family Rucellai until 1627 when it was sold on the Portinary family. The house became Hotel Italie was bought in 1833 by Carolina Bonaparte, sister of the great Napoleone and wife of Gioacchino Murat, the former king of Naples.
Carolina Bonaparte entrusted the engineer Giuseppe Martelli with the reconstruction of the building giving it's today's actual look.
After the death of Carolina Bonaparte the building was bought in 1862 by the hotelier Giuseppe Augier.
In 1912, Mr Gerardo Kraft obtained the property of the two hotels, "La Ville" and "Italie". In 1925 both hotels were closed down for the important works and reopened again in 1927 as one complex under name of Excelsior Italie with 170 rooms. It was inaugurated with a grand party in 1928.
In 1997 the Westin Excelsior has entered a new phase in its history when with the most recent renovation was completed.
Many celebrities stayed at the two properties: the Romanov family, the Dukes of Windsor, Princess Margaret of England, Elena of Romania, Queen Sofia of Greece, the King of Yugoslavia, W Churchill, Rubinstein, Charles Chaplin, Henry Fonda, Arturo Benedetti Michelangelo, Bruno Walter, Josephine Baker, Sophia Loren and etc.
On top of this the Westin Excelsior is located right near the lake Arno has the best view to entire Florence and very famous rooftop SESTO.
We were very lucky to visit it right now, when it has just opened after long lockdown, because we had the best possible upgrade to the famous Suite 524, to have breakfasts at SESTO and enjoy it all: peace, historical touch and top service.
One the best weekends in beloved Florence.
