Why Germany has the largest Korean population in Europe?

The 1960s to 70s were a time of tumultuous and painful growth in South Korea. Germany recruited ‘gastarbeiter’ or migrant workers from Korea for the manual labor to rebuild their country. The Korean women worked as nurses, while the men were sent to work as miners. Korea benefited from the high wages - the money from these workers alone fueled Korea’s rise from the post-war ashes into a modern nation.

As Korea grapples with issues surrounding migrant workers rights in Korea today, perhaps we can learn by examining the experiences of Korean minor migrants in Germany back then.
