CSR006 & CSR019 Condobolin West NSW. Wed 26th Mar 2025
A very late 3AG1 express intermodal service starts to slow down, the train will go into the 964 metre long Loop Line in Condobolin and cross Pacific National's 3SP7 heading west. The train originated in Adelaide SA, hence the "3AG" prefix.
The Loop Line being just 964 metres long, sees very little use due to the fact most intermodal services are around 1,200 to 1,800 metres long. So a rare catch in the making, video of the train leaving the Loop Line has been published.
CSR006 & CSR019 were constructed by CSR Ziyang (now known as CRRC Ziyang) as a "ready to run" construction in China. The CSR class are designated "SDA1" model especially designed for high-speed express intermodal trains and were ordered by SCT for their Trans Continental services from the east to west coast.
A second order placed in June 2021 seen the emergence of CSR013-CSR024, which are called the "Second Generation" series of the SDA1 model and feature a new colour scheme with silver replacing the traditional SCT white livery.
They original SDA1's were the first Chinese built locomotives introduced to Australia with the first order of 12 units arriving during 2011 with road numbers CSR001-CSR-012. Four more units were ordered in July 2011. SCT purchased two SDA1's secondhand from Bradken Rail (BK001 & BK002) and they entered service as CSR011 & CSR012.
Powered by a German built MTU Friedrichshafen model 20V4000R43L V20 prime mover delivering 4,220hp they are noted for their distinct "shrill" sound at speed. CSR Ziyang rated the SDA1's at 120KMh but in Australia they have a published track speed of 115KMh. They are nicknamed "Rice Burners" or "Panadaroo's".
The SDA1's are reported to be very quiet and ride well at speed and are reasonably well liked by crews. Southern Shorthaul Railroad placed an order with CRRC at Ziyang in 2025 for four locomotives. However, it has been reported that they will be a V16 powered locomotive rather than the current V20.
