NR34 & NR113 BGER NSW. Thu 29th Aug 2024
NR34 & NR113 lead intermodal service 5SP5 at a leisurely pace past the former "BGER" (Bogan Gate Explosives Reserve) sidings area bound for Perth WA, which is just over three days away. The Sydney NSW to Perth WA intermodal services run daily, sometimes twice daily in peak periods. The weekday afternoon/evening services feature double stacking of containers.
The small shed next to the communications tower once belonged to the Australian Army and was served by a siding. It is now empty and abandoned and presumably still owned by the Commonwealth government.
BGER (Bogan Gate Explosives Reserve) history:
The first rail activity at "BGER" was the opening of a railway ballast quarry on the 2nd April 1929 with a rail siding for trains established to serve the facility. With WW-II saw the military establish the army reserve in 1942 which was served by two sidings, the first military train ran on the 15th of August 1942 bring munitions from Sydney NSW.
The BGER was built on 331 hectares of land surrounded by a high security fence and patrolled by Military Police armed with rifles on horseback accompanied by German Shepherd dogs. In essence, it was small town within the confines of a military base, it also provided employment for many local people in the area who lived "off base".
The two rail sidings (there was once three sidings in 1929 for ballast train working) were referred to as "Commonwealth Sidings" and were around 1,000 feet long on the Down Main side, little trace remains today except for a rail crossing remains over the drainage culvert running to the army shed.
The ballast quarry didn't last for long, it was said the ballast wasn't of great quality and it was closed and the siding road lifted not long after, traces can still be seen today.
The sidings were in active use up until 1973 when they were decommissioned and removed sometime after, they were in the area to the right, as the train approaches in the video. Some people still live in the numerous houses on base, employed by the privately owned explosives company.
The Australian Defence Force sold BGER to a private company in December 2003 and it still operates todays as an explosive's facility by its new owners. The new owners of BGER "downsized" the staffing level and this affected the nearby town of Bogan Gate with many locals losing their jobs electing to move out of the district.
NR class GE Cv40-9i model locomotive:
The NR class were specifically designed and built for high speed point to point long distance intermodal express trains. Goninan's at Newcastle NSW built NR1 to NR 60 whilst their Western Australian factory at Bassendean built NR61 to NR120.
The NR class are designated GE model Cv40-9i series using imported American technology from General Electric USA with the locomotives built by Goninan & Co under license from GE. Powered by a four stroke V16 turbo charged GE 7FDL-16 prime mover delivering just over 4,000hp and a published track speed of 115KMh.
Nearing 30 years of age the NR class have been a success story and have proved to be a most reliable locomotive, however, in recent years some reliability issues have surfaced as the locomotives age. Pacific National started a fleet overhaul programme in June 2006 which will probably give them an extended life of another 10 to 15 years.
High speed express freight locomotives have came along way technology wise since the introduction of the NR class. GE's latest product is the C44aci series, although based on the Cv40-9i series concept, vast improvements in technology and fuel efficiencies have been made.
A total of 117 NR class remain in service, NR33 which was written off and scrapped due to the level crossing accident damage incurred at Lismore VIC on the 25th of May 2006. NR3 was rebuilt as NR121 and NR80 also rebuilt as NR122 after reconstruction after severe accident damage. NR41 & NR79 were scrapped on site after the 31st of December 2023 Barrier Highway level crossing accident.
To conserve fuel the NR class have a three stage horsepower setting activated in the driver cab, this is to provide only the power needed to the tonnage hauled at the time. Settings are: 2,850hp, 3,560hp and 4,020hp.
The locomotives weigh 132 tonnes and have a 13,500 litre capacity for long distance non stop running between NSW and Western Australia across the famous Nullarbor Plain on the Trans Australia railway.
NR120, the last of the 120 locomotive order, was handed over new on the 08th of December 1997 and NR71 on the 02nd of January 1997, both constructed by Goninan's at their Bassendean WA factory.
Have you noticed? Many of the NR class no longer have their builders plate on the cabin sides. Probably removed in the workshops during refurbishment, and for reasons unknown, not remounted onto the cab sides upon completion.
