This Warship Sink on Its First Voyage

It was built to be the pride of the Swedish Navy, a floating fortress of immense power. It sailed less than a mile.

On August 10, 1628, the mighty warship Vasa capsized and sank in Stockholm harbor in front of the very crowds that had gathered to celebrate its launch. Fatally flawed in its design, the ship was too top-heavy to sail. After 333 years on the seabed, it was salvaged and is now the most stunningly preserved 17th-century shipwreck in the world.
