1987: The Ferry That Should Never Have Sailed

On March 6, 1987, the British ferry Herald of Free Enterprise left Zeebrugge, Belgium, bound for Dover — but the bow doors were never closed. Within ninety seconds, seawater swept through the car deck, flipping the ship onto her side just outside the harbor. One hundred ninety-three people lost their lives in one of Europe’s worst peacetime maritime tragedies.

The investigation revealed systemic failures: poor communication, inadequate safety alarms, and a company culture that valued speed over checks. The resulting inquiry led to sweeping reforms and creation of the International Safety Management (ISM) Code, now a cornerstone of global maritime safety.

Every voyage today carries the lessons of that night — that even routine mistakes can sink giants.
