You can do away without a vehicle installed UHF radio. However, you must have at least a handheld UHF radio if you go 4 wheel driving or remote travel. These radios have a tonne of use. In this video, I do a brief review of the Ridge Ryder brand handheld UHF radio and also give some practical ideas of where you can use it.
