The Samarra Dancers from the Dar al Khilafa Palace, #Samarra, #Iraq

The main palace of the Abbasid-dynasty in Samarra, in Arabic called Dar al-Khilafa (residence of the caliphs) served as the main residence of the Abbasid ruler al-Mu'tasim (r. 833 – 842). The wall paintings, which once used to be in the reception-hall block, so-called “harem”, were partly uncovered by German archeologist Ernst Herzfeld in his Samarra excavation series (1911 – 1913).
