Algiers (is the capital and largest city of Algeria. The city's population at the 2008 Census was 2,988,145[3] and in 2011 was estimated to be around 3,500,000. An estimate puts the population of the larger metropolitan city to be around 5,000,000. Algiers is located on the Mediterranean Sea and in the north-central portion of Algeria.
Algiers is situated on the west side of a bay of the Mediterranean Sea. The modern part of the city is built on the level ground by the seashore; the old part, the ancient city of the deys, climbs the steep hill behind the modern town and is crowned by the casbah or citadel, 122 metres (400 ft) above the sea. The casbah and the two quays form a triangle.
The city's name is derived via French and Catalan Alger from the Arabic name al-Jazāʾir, "The Islands". This name refers to the four former islands which lay off the city's coast before becoming part of the mainland in 1525. Al-Jazāʾir is itself a truncated form of the city's older name Jazaʾir Banī Mazghanna, "The Islands of the Banu Mazghanna,Sons of Mazghana", used by early medieval geographers such as al-Idrisi and Yaqut al-Hamawi.

In antiquity, the Greeks knew the town as Ikósion (Ancient Greek: Ἰκόσιον), which was Latinized as Icosium under Roman rule. The Greeks explained the name as coming from their word for "twenty" (εἴκοσι, eíkosi), supposedly because it had been founded by 20 companions of Hercules when he visited the Atlas Mountains during his labors.

Argel es la capital y la mayor ciudad de Argelia. Se estima que en 2010 la población de la ciudad es de 2 239 613 personas, y que toda el área metropolitana está habitada por 4 375 000 personas. Argel está situada en el litoral mediterráneo y es el principal puerto del noroeste de África en dicho mar.
Conocida como «Argel la blanca» por el blanco brillante de sus edificios vistos desde el mar, en su día fue considerada como una de las ciudades árabes más románticas. Actualmente es una ciudad moderna, cuyos edificios y avenidas de estilo colonial francés empezaron a ser construidos en el siglo XIX; en el corazón de la ciudad, la alcazaba (casbah), con sus callejuelas laberínticas, corresponde a la ciudad vieja y fue declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la Unesco en el año 1992.

El nombre de Argel, Alger en francés, es una deformación francesa del árabe Aldjer, a su vez deformación del nombre árabe dado por Buluggin ibn Ziri, fundador de la dinastía de los Ziríes, cuando edificó la ciudad en 960 en las ruinas de la antigua ciudad romana de Icosium, y la llamó Djezaïr Beni Mezghanna. Varias explicaciones, sin embargo, fueron dadas en cuanto al significado del nombre dado por Buluggin ben Ziri.
Una primera explicación sería que el nombre árabe Al-Djaza’ir , "los islotes", fuera dado en referencia a los islotes que se encontraban entonces frente al puerto de Argel, y que fueron unidos para levantar el muelle actual. La referencia a la isla podría, según geógrafos musulmanes de la Edad Media, también designar la costa fértil de Argelia, arrinconada entre el vasto Sáhara y el Mediterráneo, apareciendo entonces como una isla de vida, Al-Jaza'ir.
