Alicante es una ciudad y un municipio de España 🇪🇸 , capital de la provincia homónima, en la Comunidad Valenciana. Ciudad portuaria, está situada en la costa mediterránea española. Con 334 887 habitantes (INE, 2019), es el segundo municipio más poblado de la comunidad autónoma y el undécimo del país. Forma una conurbación de 468 782 habitantes con muchas de las localidades de la comarca del Campo de Alicante: San Vicente del Raspeig, San Juan de Alicante, Muchamiel y Campello. Estadísticamente se asocia también con el área metropolitana de Alicante-Elche, que cuenta con 757 085 habitantes. Ciudad eminentemente turística y de servicios, es uno de los destinos turísticos más importantes de España.
Es sede de organismos como la Oficina de Propiedad Intelectual de la Unión Europea (EUIPO), Casa Mediterráneo o de la Consejería de Innovación, Universidades, Ciencia y Sociedad Digital de la Generalidad Valenciana. Cuenta con un importante puerto mediterráneo y su aeropuerto, ubicado en sus alrededores, es el quinto de España en número de pasajeros. La capital y su área metropolitana están conectados a través del TRAM Metropolitano de Alicante. La principal institución universitaria es la Universidad de Alicante y entre sus infraestructuras culturales destaca la Ciudad de la Luz.
Sus fiestas más importantes son las Hogueras de San Juan, que se celebran del 19 al 24 de junio y están declaradas de Interés Turístico Internacional. Destacan museos como el Museo Arqueológico de Alicante, el Museo de Arte Contemporáneo o el Museo The Ocean Race.

The area around Alicante has been inhabited for over 7000 years. The first tribes of hunter-gatherers moved down gradually from Central Europe between 5000 and 3000 BC. Some of the earliest settlements were made on the slopes of Mount Benacantil. By 1000 BC Greek and Phoenician traders had begun to visit the eastern coast of Spain, establishing small trading ports and introducing the native Iberian tribes to the alphabet, iron and the pottery wheel. The Carthaginian general Hamilcar Barca established the fortified settlement of Akra Leuka (Greek: Ἄκρα Λευκή, meaning "White Mountain" or "White Point"), in the mid-230s BC, which is generally presumed to have been on the site of modern Alicante.
