Willy the 1948 Jeep

Pictures of Willy, our 1948 Willys Jeep. This was an old farm jeep that someone made into a mudder, complete with a 1970 Chevy 350 V-8 and steering column. They did an OK job and welded in all new metal. However, the people I bought it from, beat it to death. The differentials were full of water, the frame was caked with mud and the windshield was cracked.

I removed the thunderbird hood scoop and replaced it with a piece of diamond tread. We painted over the Kermit-The-Frog green with Rustoleum Safety Red, applied with a roller. The interior was done in J.C. Whitney's Herculiner truck bed liner.

I used a lot of old boat parts from a blown Mercruiser engine, including the carburetor, starter motor and some other bits. The plastic "hat" on the carb kept water out of the ignition. Don Reynolds got me the Bombay taxi horn.

She was a sweet little ride. When it overheated, which was often, it just ran slower until it stopped. Let it cool down and it would start again. The original 9" brakes with no boost were a real eye-popper. Coming down the hill to the lake, I would put both feet on the brake pedal and hope it the pedal wouldn't break off.

We sold the jeep when we sold the lake house..... it was fun while it lasted!
